Charlotte Checkers Hockey
The Charlotte Checkers bring some exciting action to the ice for Charlotte area hockey fans. The Checkers play minor league hockey in the American Hockey League (AHL). Fans can enjoy all the action at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Uptown Charlotte.
The current Charlotte Checkers team is the third in a series of hockey team franchises in the city to have used that name. This team is an affiliate of the NHL Carolina Hurricanes and the ECHL Florida Everblades. The AHL is a thirty team league based in the U.S. and Canada that is the primary developmental league for the NHL. All of the NHL teams have an AHL affiliate. Jeff Daniels has been the head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers since 2008. Prior to that Daniels served as an assistant coach with the Carolina Hurricanes. His 15 year professional career as a forward in the NHL included time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Hartford Whalers, Nashville Predators, and Carolina Hurricanes.
The Charlotte Checkers play in the AHLs Western Conference. They currently lead the Midwest Division. Hockey fans can still see a number of Checkers home games on the 2011-12 schedule. The Norfolk Admirals are in town on February 12, followed by the Oklahoma City Barons on February 24 and 25. The Chicago Wolves are in Charlotte for Time Warner Cable Appreciation Night on March 10. This special promotion includes 2 for 1 tickets. The Checkers play Chicago again on March 11. The Checkers meet the Norfolk Admirals again on March 16 and 18 and the Peoria Rivermen on March 20 and 21. Four home games in April will complete the season. The Milwaukee Admirals will be in Charlotte for games on April 3 and 5, and the Checkers are scheduled to play the Abbotsford Heat on April 7 and 8. A special promotion is available for every Sunday home game. The Coke Family Four Pack includes 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, and 4 Cokes for $60. Bring the whole family out to enjoy a game.
Tickets are available at the Arena Box Office or at the Ticketmaster kiosks outside the arenas main entrance. Single game tickets on the upper level range from $12-15. Lower level tickets range from $12-40, and On Ice seating is $50. The Time Warner Cable Arena is located at 333 E. Trade Street. Plenty of parking is available around the arena in garages and surface lots. Fans can also park at one of the seven park and ride lots and take the Lynx train to the Trade Street Station.
